The University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) is the only liberal arts institution in the sixteen campus University of North Carolina system. The liberal arts education focuses on serving its students who are prepared for the academic rigors offered by an intellectually stimulating environment. History of UNCA
The university was founded in 1927, known at the time as Buncombe County Junior College, for local area residents that wished to pursue their education after high school. The school's name changed several times to include Asheville-Biltmore College in 1958. The university became the first 2-year school in NC to quality as a state-sponsored community college.
In 1961 the college moved to its present site on 266 beautiful acres. Several years later it evolved into a state-sponsored 4-year college with a new board of trustees. In 1966 it awarded its first baccalaureate diplomas in liberal arts. Then in 1969, the school merged with The Consolidated University of North Carolina as the University of North Carolina at Asheville. It missions was established to offer a superior undergraduate liberal arts education. Later in the early 1970s, ten other state-sponsored senior institutions merged into the current sixteen University of North Carolina network.
